Pupils' behind the scenes glimpse of tile factory

Children from a Teignbridge primary school won a first-hand look at work on a major expansion of the Newton Abbot-based British Ceramic Tile factory.

Pupils from St Catherine's Church of England Primary School at Heathfield were given a guided tour of the site by Exeter-based builders Rok.

They had scooped top prizes in a competition to design their own Rok tiles.

Pupils designed the tiles and three winners received a behind-the-scenes look at work being completed by Rok at British Ceramic Tiles, based at the heart of the Heathfield community.

The £15million project will more than double manufacturing capacity and is scheduled for completion next January.
Barry Durber, manufacturing manager at the factory, said: “It was a delight to have some of the local children to share in the art of ceramic tile manufacture and to appreciate the sheer scale of our developing operations.”
